Discover Whiskeytown’s most iconic waterfall – dramatic, refreshing, and photogenic in every season.
Enjoy a short, family-friendly hike that delivers big rewards without a big climb.
Witness nature’s resilience as fire-scarred hillsides give way to a canyon alive with water, moss, and shade.
Of Whiskeytown’s four major waterfalls, Brandy Creek Falls is the most dramatic, the most photographed, and the most beloved. Tumbling in multiple tiers down a steep granite gorge, the falls are an irresistible draw in spring and early summer, when snowmelt swells Brandy Creek into a foaming cascade. Even in late summer, when the flow lessens, the falls retain their beauty-an oasis of cool water and deep shade.
The falls are not just a natural wonder but also part of the cultural story of this once-booming gold district. Brandy Creek itself earned its name during the Gold Rush, when miners working these slopes were said to stash or spill barrels of their favorite spirit. Whiskeytown’s very name hints at hard-drinking camps, so it seems fitting that Brandy Creek would keep the tradition alive. Today, the “brandy” isn’t in bottles but in the sparkling water tumbling over polished granite.
The geology is equally compelling. Brandy Creek tumbles over resistant granitic bedrock that fractures into clean ledges, creating the classic stair-step falls. In wetter years, the creek pours in white ribbons over mossy rock; in drier times, its rivulets thread more delicately, revealing sculpted channels and plunge pools. The shaded canyon, carved over millennia, is now cloaked in alder, maple, and Douglas-fir.
Brandy Creek Falls is also a tale of renewal. This part of Whiskeytown National Recreation Area has endured wildfire, including the devastating 2018 Carr Fire. Yet even amid fire-scorched hillsides, Brandy Creek persists-its cool waters nurturing mosses, ferns, and wildflowers, its canyon sheltering wildlife. Visitors often note how quickly nature rebounds here, how green shoots and bright blossoms reclaim blackened slopes.
What makes this hike so appealing is the variety packed into a short distance. In less than three miles, you travel from hot canyon bottom to cool gorge; from trickling pools to thunderous cascades. Each season adds its signature: spring torrents, summer shade and swimming holes, autumn’s golden leaves, winter’s icy lace.
Brandy Creek Falls is the crown jewel of Whiskeytown’s waterfall circuit. It’s accessible yet adventurous, family-friendly yet dramatic, cool in summer and colorful in fall. More than just a destination, it’s a reminder that in a land once torn by gold fever and scarred by fire, beauty still flows freely.
From the Visitor Center, drive west 5.5 miles on Highway 299. Turn left onto Brandy Creek Road and follow it about 3.5 miles. Bear left at the fork onto Brandy Creek Falls Road and continue 1.5 miles to the signed parking area. The last stretch of road is narrow and partly paved; drive carefully. In summer, parking fills quickly – arrive early.
From the signed trailhead, the path immediately plunges you into a shaded canyon of maple, alder, and Douglas-fir. The sound of running water is a constant companion. In spring, wildflowers brighten the understory; in autumn, the big-leaf maples turn brilliant yellow and gold.
The grade is moderate but steady, climbing as the trail crisscrosses Brandy Creek on sturdy footbridges. Pools and riffles along the way offer opportunities to pause, cool your hands, and watch dappled sunlight on the water. About a mile in, the canyon narrows and the sound of the falls grows louder.
The final approach climbs stone steps and a narrow footpath to the base of Brandy Creek Falls, where the creek fans out across a broad granite face, dropping in five tiers that together total more than 50 feet. Mist sprays the air, mosses coat the rocks, and hikers linger on the smooth granite ledges. The Park Service has constructed safe viewing areas, but the falls retain a wild, untamed feel.
