Tales from the Trail We Call Life

I’ve spent a lifetime telling people to “Take a hike!” Now I’d like to take audiences where my legs have traveled—but more importantly, where my curiosity has led me.
This is my signature presentation: An Evening with The Trailmaster—sharing my favorite tales and a few harmless obsessions gathered over decades of wandering California and beyond. Why did I decide to solo walk the entire California coast? What possessed me to visit and hike all 280 California state parks? And why would any sane person follow California’s Mission Trail to all 21 missions?
Along the way, I’ve learned that you meet out-of-the-way people in out-of-the-way places—and one of them may be yourself. I’ve discovered that poison oak grows everywhere and so does hope. I’ll share curious tales of hiking with African bushmen in the hills above Malibu, walking in the transcendent light of an Ojai Pink Moment, and what drove me to compile a Hiker’s Dictionary.
Mostly, this is an evening about paying attention. Because if hiking has taught me anything, it’s that the world is far more interesting, funny, mysterious, and hopeful than we often give it credit for. I’d love to share a few of those discoveries with you.
